Statue of Liberty: Quick and Easy Day Trip

Taking your kids to see the Statue of Liberty? Quick Tips to Make it Easy:

  1. Pack easy and sharable snacks. Pack too many and bring some extra baggies.
  2. If you can avoid bringing your stroller, do it. There’s a lot of people to weave in between. The carrier is great for days like this.
  3. Go from Jersey City side if it’s easy – there are fewer passengers on the ferry.
  4. Parking in Liberty State Park is $7, cash or charge. It’s not included in the price of the ferry ticket.
  5. Don’t buy the tickets online – there’s no discount. Get ’em when you get there. No rush.
  6. Kids under 4 are free.
  7. Don’t bring your pocket knife. There’s airport style screening at the entrance.
  8. Sit by a window that opens so you can feel the wind on your face. The boat is part of the fun – enjoy it.
  9. There’s a bathroom on the boat. Use it. There’s also a snack shop, but you already packed all your snacks, so you’re good.
  10. Depending on the age of your kids, you might want to skip the Ellis Island part. It’s a museum – how does your 4 year old do in museums? Feel free to stay on the boat and go directly to the Statue.
  11. Plan to walk around the whole island. Then plan to leave. The whole thing should take an hour.
  12. Don’t take little kids inside the statue. It’s too much.
  13. The cell service on the island STINKS. Plan a meeting place in case you get separated – you won’t be able to text to meet.
