“Postcards from the Edge is a postcard writing event where we’ll reach out to House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senator Booker and Senator Menendez about the issues that are important in our lives,” Meghan McKee told me.
“A lot of us have tried calling their representatives to find their voicemail boxes full. Writing (and sending) with different handwriting is a great way to demonstrate that we’re not robots, but humans of all types with different issues.
“As a woman, I feel we have been pushed down too long. A lot of rights are being taken away. And immigration is so important. We live with Ellis Island in our front yard. When people arrived in the United States, their first steps were in Jersey City. I want to live a country that cares for each other and works together.
“We encourage everyone to come out, no matter who they are or where they live. We’re not only writing our New Jersey senators, we’re also mailing cards to representatives from other states whose actions we disagree with. As long as you want to write your representative and encourage them to do the things you believe in, you’re invited!
“We are excited to have about 55 people definitely coming, but we’re hoping that even more people will walk by, see this happening, and will stop in to sign a postcard – even if it’s just a quick stop. It’s not going to take a lot of time. Anyone can come in, write a quick note, and be on their way.
“I’m hoping this will be the first of many postcard events, and I hope it accomplishes the ‘get out and do something’ itch that so many of us are feeling. After the Women’s March in Washington, DC, a group of us started the Jersey City Action Group to further the cause, and this was one of the causes that I felt I could help out with. I want to reach out to people who might feel uncomfortable protesting and marching – they have a voice too.
“Bring your ideas and your concerns. Everything else will be there, including stamps for postcards, addresses and pens. You’ll leave the event with a sense of pride, because you did something that matters.”
Join the group at LITM (140 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NJ) Feb. 2 from 6-10 pm. Spread the word.
