The time has come to spread the word, whatever those words are.
Jersey City Slam presents the Women of the World Poetry Slam Qualifier tomorrow night, January 26 at 7 pm at Tea NJ. The winner will then represent Jersey City at the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Dallas, TX.
Last year’s winner, Ann Marie Manso, will be hosting the invitational slam, presenting Jersey City’s top female and gender non-conforming poets in a performance poetry tournament designed for individual competition. Poets will perform four poems of varying lengths during preliminary bouts, leading to the main event taking place March 15th – 18th where top poets compete for the title of 2017 Women of the World Champion.
“Last year the event was in Brooklyn,” Manso told me. “To be quite frank, I didn’t make it very far. But I think the best part of it was being able to listen to the narratives that were very different than mine. It was inspirational to me as a poet, as a person, as a woman.
“I think that a lot of the trouble that we’re in politically is because we don’t listen to other people’s stories. Just because this problem doesn’t affect me personally doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Performance poetry is a very in-your-face way to experience these stories. When someone is crying in front of you, it’s difficult to ignore it. Poetry is important to expose us to different narratives, points of view, and just different people.”
