Jersey City’s Frasier Fir: The Backstory

“I go out and tag the trees in August. I walk the fields and I tag about 80 trees, all different sizes, all different shapes. On the day after Thanksgiving, I send my 18 wheeler down to pick them up. It’s an 8 hour drive to get to the farm, driving as fast as possible.

“The Jersey City tree is a Frasier Fur; that tree probably is 30-40 years old. The tree is 26 feet tall, it comes from Peak Farms in North Carolina. It’s hard to get them to grow that perfectly. But this grower prunes them so they look perfect and cuts them down for us.

“This grower has actually changed his business model; he doesn’t really sell cut trees anymore, but he does it for me every year. Four years ago he did the trees for the White House.

“Next year we’ll do a bigger tree for Jersey City. As the city grows, we’ll go bigger. I think the area has changed. The lighting gets bigger every year too, right?”

Frank Parker is the owner of FP Executive Landscapes. He does a lot of landscape work for Jersey City, including the flower pots throughout the pedestrian mall. And he knows his trees. His trees can also be found at very high end homes, including Eli Manning’s and Jay-Z’s.
