How to Get Through Just Today

For Margaux

  1. Remember that everything is always more complicated and nuanced than it seems, and that this was not a simple battle of good versus evil.
  2. Choose to believe that for many, this election was about challenging cronyism and dynasties as opposed to embracing hate and entitlement.
  3. Unplug for a while. Take a moment and return to the days before social media and 24 hour news. Delete the apps for a day or two.
  4. Listen to Nina Simone. Sway, hum.
  5. Play Lego with your children.
  6. Drink tea.
  7. Err on the side of compassion even more than ever. Use kindness as a shield.
  8. Tell your kids that when you were a kid, you didn’t win the championship soccer game and Papa told you that “Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you.” Then say, “Isn’t that funny?” Call Papa or talk about bears. Roar.
  9. Begin, or continue, to teach yourself Spanish.
  10. Exercise. Take your vitamins. Breathe. Sweep and mop your floor.
  11. Resist the urge.
